A Revolutionary Step towards Cannabis Legalization and Economic Restoration 🚀
Thailand’s 1st Ganja Cup Unveiled! In June 2022, the Thai Government took a momentous stride by legalizing the growth and consumption of cannabis, accompanied by the release of over 4,000 prisoners previously incarcerated for cannabis-related offenses. This historic decision aimed to officially acknowledge the failure of the “war on drugs” and pave the way for the revival of Thailand’s economy, particularly in impoverished regions like Esaan. Enthusiasm and gratitude reverberated throughout the nation as the criminalization of cannabis was challenged, sparking hope for countless individuals seeking justice and relief. 💚
Philosophy: Embracing the Value of Local Ganjas and Landraces 🌿
Prempavee the founder of the 1st Ganja Cup, and a young mother from Esaan’s Phon Bok Village. Prempavee, driven by an unwavering passion for the well-being of plants, animals, and her community, embarks on a mission to preserve, protect, and enhance the local ganjas and landraces. Recognizing the significance of local strains and their contribution to future hybrid varieties, she believes that accessible knowledge, tools, and facilities are paramount for small farmers. The Ganja Cup serves as an opportunity for growth and improvement, emphasizing health and sustainability for present and future generations. Though financial gain is not the primary focus, this networking platform generates economic prospects for all participants. 🌱
Participants of the Ganja Cup showcase their expertise in harnessing the natural elements to nurture and cultivate extraordinary cannabis plants. Outdoor growing presents a unique set of challenges and opportunities, as growers work in harmony with sunlight, fresh air, rainfall, and the rich, fertile soil of Thailand’s diverse landscapes. Those judging the competition will recognize the artistry of outdoor cannabis cultivation, they evaluate the aroma, flavor, potency, and overall quality of the outdoor-grown strains. As the competition unfolds, the spotlight shines brightly on the skill, ingenuity, and dedication of growers.
Inception and Frequency: The 1st Ganja Cup in 2023/2024 🌄
The tournament commenced this year (2023), marking the start of a groundbreaking series of events. The competition unfolds monthly, spanning from May ’23 to April ’24, culminating in two grand finals. The first grand final takes place at the end of December ’23, while the second will be held on April 20th, 2024. This extensive timeline allows ample opportunities for growers and dispensaries to showcase their finest strains and cultivars. 🏆Additionally, there will be a small event specifically for outdoor growers, providing an opportunity for the entire community to come together. Only three winners from each tournament will have the chance to participate in the Finals. The prize for each tournament is valued at 18,000 baht. The victorious grower in each tournament, who impresses the judges with their exceptional outdoor-grown strain, not only receives the prize but also gains access to the main Finals.
Reinvesting in the community 🤝
While prize money is indeed offered, it is important to emphasize that this is a collaborative community event rather than a strictly competitive competition. Once the participants reach the Finals, they will come together for a grand Thai-style party, organized and sponsored collectively. The winners of the finals are required to reinvest their awards by providing microcredit to smaller farmers, with the expectation of receiving the money back after a two-year period. This system has been devised to encourage the top growers to assist and support newcomers, ensuring that everyone ultimately emerges as a winner.

The second-place winner receives 4,000 baht and also advances to the competition finals. Third place is awarded 3,000 baht and gains entry to the finals as well. However, fourth-place and lower receive complimentary gifts for participating and do not qualify for the finals. As tournaments are held every month, growers can re-enter in subsequent months to try and secure a spot in the finals. The total prize money for the finals will reach millions of baht. Although an exact figure for the total amount hasn’t been reached at the time of writing.
